Das Album … Mule Variations is a very good begginer Tom Waits album, for those who have not completely learned how to digest Tom Waits unmistakeable musical techniques.

While his voice is not for everyone, he should be checked out just for his musical talent.
That’s a big reason why Waits had to break ties with Howe when he recorded Swordfishtrombones.I feel like the big difference is the arrangements – the rockers on Heartattack and Vine don’t have the cool instrumentation on later albums, like the junkyard percussion. I do think the 1001 album choices are a little random – often I agree with them, but not in the case of Waits.We have all of his records here, and are pretty big (in Japan) fans. Can anybody write something about the new 2017/2018 remasters of all the records? Tom Waits has enjoyed a remarkable career – emerging in the early 1970s as a whisky soaked, piano playing balladeer, it seemed like his career was petering out in the early 1980s. Some live cuts, some rarities, maybe a disc of single only cuts. That’d push itself into the top 5 and today – because you got me in a Waits mood – push Rain Dogs out.

Unquestionably he meets that bar. Soweit, so gut! (For example, check the live version of Ruby’s Arms on Big Time.)
Rain Dogs - 1985. All of his work appeals to me. Somebody? That whole alky-loser-blues thing was completely made up (a bit like Seasick Steve but unlike SS - Waits had genuine talent).

I think he was embarrassed about it. The songs are generally pretty good though.Most of my Waits listening was probably over that exact same time frame. Probably my favorite with Rain Dogs.
Swordfishtrombones then Rain Dogs, with Blood Money coming in at #5.
And Jersey Girl, and Ruby’s Arms are great ballads despite the production.

Songs like Raised right men, may take you by surprise. I don’t think I can say. If you are unsure about Tom Waits, listen to Whistlin past the graveyard, blue valentines, waiting for the heart of Saturday night and then move on.
The title track and Downtown could be on Swordfishtrombones, and wouldn’t look out of place next to Gin Soaked Boy or Down, Down, Down. It's impossible to find his stuff where I live, buying single LPs is a logistical nightmare, and I'd spring for the heavy postage of a big box set. I find his voice pretty tough on the 21st century albums.I think I prefer the character in his voice. Interestingly, he was one of the inspirations for Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Batman villain, The Joker in the 2008 classic 'The Dark Knight'.

After that he seemed to go on some sort of Beefheart kick and went on to deny his earlier work. It’s a “transitional” album in every sense of the word, Waits has one foot in the past, one in the future.
He is a genius but really reserved only for those with a "broad, up for a bit of dark dangerous fun", musical taste!.
